Subject: Support for Golden Gate Greenway Asphalt Mural
Dear Mayor Daniel Lurie,
CC: SF Public Works, SF Public Planning, SF Arts Commission

I am writing to express my enthusiastic support for the creation of a new city process to plan, permit, fund, and install a street-wide asphalt mural along Golden Gate Avenue, stretching from Leavenworth to Jones.

This mural would beautify the block, create visible zones for children’s play, and define emergency lanes and road closures for improved safety. A temporary street mural installation in chalk donated by Stryder Designs in Spring 2024 was overwhelmingly celebrated in the community. Similar murals have been successfully implemented elsewhere in the city, and the Tenderloin community deserves the same opportunity to transform its streetscape in a way that fosters community pride, safety, and vibrancy.

Currently, there is no city department empowered to permit projects like this in neighborhoods such as the Tenderloin, even when there is broad community support. I urge you and city leaders to create a process—through the SF Planning Department or another appropriate avenue—that enables the installation of a street-wide mural, with a goal of completing the project by the end of 2025.

Thank you for your leadership in supporting this vital step toward enhancing the Tenderloin community's public spaces. I urge you to work with St. Anthony's and the Golden Gate Greenway Coalition to make this mural a reality.
